Just sitting here in my office, looking out the window at the sunshine, trees and bushes, thinking about how blessed I am to be able to live in San Diego. The Carlsbad Flower Fields are around the corner and I can walk to look at them during the summer. The bright colors of the flowers take my breath away and the panoramic ocean view beyond the flowers is priceless! The near by strawberry fields smell so sweet and wonderful as the strawberries bloom and grow! I love to watch the tourists that come to Legoland with their young children during the summer months. My son used to love Legoland, but alas, he is growing up and California Adventure is more to his liking when it comes to amusement parks! It's amazing to me how fast he's grown into a young man! He even says things to me like "oh mom" or "you see mom, it's like this". Where has my baby gone?
I have always lived in San Diego County and while I have thought about living in other places, I've never taken any action to move. My whole family lived in San Diego at one time. My sister was the first to move away. I hate to admit that I don't remember when she did, but I know it was before my niece was born (and she's 16 now). My mom and dad moved to Nevada about 7 years ago. They have a love-hate relationship with where they live. My mom misses the cultural aspects of San Diego. One of my brothers lives somewhere near Sacramento (that's a whole story in itself), and my little brother and nephew still live in San Diego. I guess we are the lone survivors!
I know that I could live in other parts of the country for a lot less than what it takes to live in San Diego. My fiance owns a home in Northern California (and I mean NORTHERN) and while it's a charming little town, it's just that...a little town. He loves to hunt, fish, hike, swim and be outdoors. I like to joke around and call him "Indiana Jones", but in all seriousness (geez, that's a word I rarely use) he is an all around guy and I suppose I'm attracted to that.
We often say that I'm the City Girl and he's the Country Boy, and we really are! I love to go to the theater, fancy restaurants, cultural events, and I don't even mind the traffic on the freeways. I have to give him credit, he will never turn me down when I want to go to a "city girl" type of thing. And I don't turn him down when he wants to be "Indiana Jones". While it does scare me to watch him jump off the cliffs at Sunset Cliffs, I just take my lawn chair and sit close to the edge and watch (that's about as Indiana Jones as I get LOL). I suppose I shouldn't tell you that he's actually been ticketed by the police for "jumping in the ocean". Yes it's true! But he went to court and fought it and he actually WON! He had the courtroom roaring with laughter as he presented his case to the judge (claiming not guilty of course). The judge couldn't let the case go to trial, so he dismissed the charges but gave him a stearn warning about how dangerous it was to jump off the cliffs! In my opinion, the judge probably wanted to ask him when he was going to jump next and to call him to go along!
Now back to living in paradise...yes, it really is paradise. But, the price of paradise is high with no chance of it becoming affordable. I think I need to give more thought to moving, but I'll do that on a rainy day.
